“Powder coat” finish not very good. – These arrived in a box without much padding. My initial look was that they appeared to be of good quality, but then I took a closer look. The “powder coat” finish was chipped, allowing the metal underneath to show. Given the price, this is not something that makes me want to return them since I can touch up the finish. However, it probably shows that the metal was not adequately cleaned and prepared before the coating was applied. Shipping should not have damaged a good quality powder coat finish.

Good Solution for Fishing Kayaks – We have two fishing kayaks that were just a little too big for the j-racks. The saddle rack is by far easier to load and unload these wider kayaks from the side of my truck or from the front/back. We bought extra rollers for ease of loading, which we have not had to use yet. I recommend ensuring all bolts are tight before each transport, as one of the racks slipped out and shifted our kayak near sideways once while we were driving. It was only the funny looks from other drivers that made us stop to look. Our tie downs kept it from falling. It seems each time we use them, two or three bolts become a bit loose. These are simple hand turning mechanism. Not sure if it is an “us” problem, or the quality of the bolts.

Good for the price – These are fairly easy to use and install. Only problem is that on long road trips the nuts have a tendancy to loosen and then the cradles will slide. If you buy these be sure to make sure they are tightened up at each stop. Having your kayak slide off of the cradle at 80 mph is a little unnerving. Always secure your kayak at the front and the back when traveling at high speeds. I was able to tell that my kayak had moved by the slack and tension on my front tie downs.

Easy to install, hard to keep in place – I’ve had this kayak saddle for a few weeks now, I use it for my 75lb kayak of which it does well. It took maybe 30 minutes to install then another 10 to adjust to fit the kayak. After the first trip out I found that even though I had tightened the brackets the saddle comes with down to the point they were bending a little, the saddle mounts would still slide a little, enough to cause the kayak to drop between them when pulled to the side. I ended up tightening the bolts down as far as they could physically be turned without a wrench or pliers and so far they still slowly slide out of place, usually when loading and unloading the kayak. The sliding is small enough now to where it is still safe to use. ALSO, if you get this mount system don’t bother with the tie downs that come with it. I tried to use them, but they were too short to reach across to the other side of the kayak so I bought 20ft tie downs instead which work much better.-for reference the kayak is a lifetime Teton pro 116

Glad i bought this type – Easy to install, i am 69 yo gal, 5’1 and had no problem at all. Added a suction roll mount to back window, and i can complete the loading of a large kayak mounted on my Subaru Outback single handed. I bought additionally bow and stern ropes and loops. When no kayak on board the saddles, we never know they are there, quiet and firmly attached to factory car rack. Very happy w this purchase.

I expect these to break, but they work – The bottom half of the pole attachment is plastic. Well, the top half is too. It looked like maybe they were metal. Nope. The only thing that’s metal is the bracket where the cradle pad is installed. Everything else is rubber or plastic. My kayak is 114 pounds dry. I need the full capacity of these mounts. They rotate on the bar even when very tight. That wouldn’t happen if the bar mounts were metal. Oh well. I got what I paid for I guess.

All is fine – just the bolts are facing your roof. – The product is a good product. Serves its purpose. The belt being fead through the stands itself gives you ability to “cocoon” the kayak between the strap and the rubber parts of the stand.
